DECK + PATIO COMBOS
Wood deck off the house, paver patio around the pool, seamless transition between the two. One project, one crew, one coordinated design.
WHY COMBINE THEM
There's a reason the best backyards almost always have both. A raised wood or composite deck off the back door gets you out of the house clean, keeps dining and BBQ space near the kitchen, and handles grade changes against the house foundation. A paver or stone patio at grade does everything a deck can't — pool surround, fire pit, heavy furniture, year-round durability.
The problem with using two separate contractors is the transition. Different crews don't talk. The deck stairs don't line up with the patio pattern. The materials clash. Grading gets half-done. You end up with two good projects stitched together badly.
We build the whole thing as one job. One set of drawings, one grading plan, one crew that sequences the deck footings, patio base prep and final finishes together. The deck meets the patio at a proper step or flush transition with the grading pitched right the first time.
SCOPE
A combo project typically covers 700 to 2,000 square feet of finished outdoor living. Here's what's in scope.
Pressure treated frame on frost-depth footings. Composite or cedar deck boards. Railings to code.
Stair runs from deck to patio detailed so pattern, rise and run all line up. Rail transitions, landings, side skirts.
Techo-Bloc or natural stone. Full base prep to frost depth. Edge restraint, polymeric joint sand.
Grading coordinated across both surfaces. Drainage pitched from house and deck out to yard, not into the pool.
Patio around the pool with proper coping and slip-rated finishes. Deck kept back from wet zone if appropriate.
Low voltage lighting run under deck boards, in stair risers, and along patio edges. Outlets where you need them.
HOW IT WORKS
Chris designs the whole yard, not just the deck or the patio. Grading, drainage, deck, patio, pool, fire, cabana all sketched together.
Permit for the deck portion. Utility locates. Build sequence planned so excavation doesn't damage finished work.
Deck footings poured. Patio excavation done at the same visit. Grading pitched.
Deck framed and decked. Patio base, pavers and finishes installed after, with the transition detail built out.
Railings, fascia, lighting, joint sand, furniture-ready clean. Final walk-through together.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Grade. Most London area homes sit 2 to 4 feet above grade at the back door. A patio would need massive retaining walls to come up to door height. A deck handles that transition cheaply and opens up the yard behind it for the patio. The combo usually costs less than an all-patio solution when you add the retaining wall math.
Yes, because we design them together. Cedar decks usually pair with warmer Techo-Bloc tones. Composite in grey or charcoal pairs with modern Raffinato or Blu 60 in cool tones. We show you combinations before you commit.
You can, but it's cheaper if we plan for it now — even if the pool goes in next year. Plumbing sleeves, conduit, and grading for the pool zone can be roughed in during the combo build for a fraction of tearing it up later.
Small combo (250 sqft deck + 400 sqft patio): 3 to 4 weeks on site. Full combo with pool deck, stairs and lighting: 5 to 8 weeks. Permits in London currently add 4 to 6 weeks before we can start.
Deck: lumber and composite carry manufacturer warranties (composite is 25+ years). Patio: Techo-Bloc lifetime product warranty on pavers. Our workmanship warranty is 2 years on the full project, with footings warrantied for life.
