THE FIRE QUESTION FIRST

Gas, Natural Gas, Propane, or Wood — Pick the Fuel First

The fuel you choose dictates the structure, the permit path, the ongoing cost, and how often you actually use it. Get this right up front.

Natural gas is the most popular in London. Runs off your home's gas line. Flip a switch, fire on. No tanks to refill. Cheap per hour. Requires a gas line run by a licenced fitter and municipal permit for the tie-in. Once installed, it's set-and-forget.

Propane is the flexible option. Tank under the feature, lasts several evenings of use. Portable-ish (you can move the feature if you need to). Same aesthetic as natural gas. Fuel cost is higher long term.

Wood burning is the real-fire option. Nothing beats it for ambience and smell. But it's also smoke, ash, storage, and in some London neighbourhoods, restricted by bylaw. Check your zone before building.

WHAT WE BUILD

Fire and Water Feature Types

From a $6K gas fire pit on an existing patio to a $40K integrated fire wall with a water feature. All to code.

Gas Fire Pits

Stone or block surround with stainless burner, lava rock or fire glass, hidden gas line. Usually 36 to 60 inches across.

Fire Tables

Dining or coffee table height, gas burner in the centre. Lounge-focused. Great for small patios where a pit would dominate.

Fire Walls

Vertical fire feature in a retaining or privacy wall. Linear burner, dramatic effect. Often paired with sheer descent water.

Wood Fire Pits

Masonry wood-burning pit with proper clearances, ash pit, and spark arrest where needed. Check London bylaw first.

Bubbling Urns

Glazed or stone urn bubbling into a hidden basin. Modern, quiet water feature. See our water features page for pond options.

Sheer Descent Walls

Thin sheet of water down a stone face. Pairs beautifully with fire walls for a fire + water combo.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

What Does a Fire or Water Feature Cost?

Installed ranges for 2026, before HST. Gas line rough-in and permit included:

  • • Gas fire pit (stone surround): $5,000 to $12,000
  • • Fire table: $3,500 to $9,000
  • • Fire wall: $12,000 to $30,000
  • • Wood burning fire pit: $4,000 to $10,000
  • • Bubbling urn: $3,500 to $7,000
  • • Sheer descent water wall: $4,000 to $10,000

Cost drivers:

  • Fuel type (propane tank vs natural gas line run)
  • Distance from gas meter to feature (longer run = more cost)
  • Stone or block surround material
  • Feature size (diameter for pits, height for walls)
  • Ignition system (manual vs push-button vs remote)
  • Integration with surrounding patio and lighting

All ranges are ballpark figures for London and Southwestern Ontario, 2026. HST (13%) added as a final line on every quote.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Common Questions

Does London have restrictions on wood burning fire pits?

Yes. London has an open-air burning bylaw. Wood burning fires are restricted by zone, setback distance from property lines and structures, and some neighbourhoods are no-burn. Natural gas and propane features are not restricted the same way because they're considered appliances. We check your specific address before building wood.

Do I need a permit for a gas fire feature?

Yes, for the gas line tie-in. TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority) regulates gas work in Ontario, and the connection to your meter needs a licenced gas fitter and a permit. We handle all of that. The feature itself doesn't usually need a building permit if it's ground level.

Can I use my fire pit in the winter?

Gas yes, wood yes. Gas features are all-season — just clear snow off the burner. Wood burning pits work in winter too, obviously. Bubbling urns and water features need to be winterized before freeze.

How does ignition work?

Three options. Manual: match-lit, cheapest, you turn on gas then light with a long lighter. Push-button: electronic igniter on the feature. Remote: Bluetooth or remote control, light from the patio. We recommend push-button or remote for anything you'll use weekly.

Are fire features safe around kids?

With safe design and supervision, yes. We build with proper clearances, recessed burners, and edge heights that keep flames contained. Glass wind guards and fire screens are optional add-ons. But a fire is a fire — supervise kids like you would around any open flame.
